The initiative is being carried out in partnership with Missio Aachen, a German Catholic aid organisation, and aims to help vulnerable women rebuild their lives and support their families amid ongoing insecurity and displacement.

The programme began with a week-long workshop that combined training on human rights, women’s health, and economic self-sufficiency. Participants received health screenings and practical instruction in soap-making, baking, poultry farming, and crop cultivation. Start-up materials, equipment, and seeds were distributed according to each participant’s chosen area of activity, allowing the women to begin generating income and developing sustainable livelihoods.

According to Sr. Djephlada, coordinator of the Tertiary Sisters’ migrants’ programme in Taraba State, women living in situations of displacement often face heightened risks of abuse and exploitation while also struggling to provide for their families. The programme seeks to address both challenges by combining education and support with practical opportunities for economic independence.

Participants were also organised into local support groups to encourage mutual assistance and accountability. The Tertiary Sisters are working with local partners, including Bridge of Refuge and Holy Family Catholic Parish in Takum, to provide ongoing coaching and follow-up throughout the project. Sr. Loveline Ziseng, Nurse Administrator at Holy Family Health Centre, will monitor the health outcomes of participants as the programme progresses.

The need for such initiatives remains significant. During the launch, additional women arrived seeking admission to the programme, highlighting the extent of economic hardship and displacement in the region. Their presence underscored both the demand for assistance and the relevance of the project within the local community.

Taraba State continues to experience the effects of insecurity and displacement caused by ethnic conflict, farmer-herder violence, and broader instability in northern Nigeria. The state has also hosted large numbers of refugees from neighbouring Cameroon since violence erupted in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions in 2016, creating additional pressures on local communities.

Despite these challenges, the women participating in the programme have remained engaged and motivated as they work to build greater stability for themselves and their families. Through training, support, and access to income-generating opportunities, the initiative seeks to provide not only immediate assistance but also a foundation for long-term resilience and self-reliance.

The Tertiary Sisters of St. Francis and Missio Aachen have launched a 10-month programme in northeastern Nigeria to help 50 displaced women rebuild their lives through counselling, skills training, and income-generating opportunities.

[4

post-6081","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
