Tertiary Sisters to Create Nature Oasis at Maria Regina Pacis in South Tyrol, Italy

Por Sr. Sieglinde Rainer

This coming autumn, with the support of a project group from the ‘De Pace Fidei’ Institute of the Diocese of Bozen/Brixen, part of the green spaces (the upper garden) at Maria Regina Pacis will be transformed into a nature oasis designed to provide a refuge for many birds, insects and reptiles. The project group is led and supported by Markus Moling, Judith Sitzmann, Martin Lintner, Hugo Wassermann, Georg von Mörl and other experts. Across the region, parish gardens and other gardens are being transformed into nature oases under the motto ‘Parishes in Bloom’ or ‘Nature on Your Doorstep’. The parish gardens in Sterzing and Bruneck have already been completed. The ‘upper garden’ is being transformed into a natural garden, in collaboration with experts and like-minded people, where people, animals and plants can thrive. It is a deeply Franciscan endeavour that treats all creatures as brothers and sisters. The specialists Hugo Wassermann and Georg von Mörl (whose wife Manuela – a former home economics student at Maria Regina Pacis – was also present) spoke about their work, explaining that nature conservation begins on a small scale, that a great deal of persuasion is required, and that a number of projects are already underway. Georg von Mörl reported that there are nearly 500 different species of bees and wasps, and that as soon as you create a habitat for them, a whole host of insects come to life. Many animals have lost their habitats due to human insensitivity.

On 13 July 2026 at 2.30 pm, an information session took place at the motherhouse. The community of sisters in Sterzing had organised the event. Quite a few interested fellow sisters took part.

On 13 August, the first phase (a dry enclosure for reptiles and young bees) was completed. Two married couples from Sterzing, Hugo Wassermann and Georg von Mörl worked from early in the morning until the afternoon towards our shared goal.

I will oversee the project and continue to provide updates.
