Comprehensive Catholic education in rural Cameroon

Traditional Catholic education in an unexpected setting

In Europe and North America, the contours of a Catholic education are well known: a rigorous focus on academics; the foundational role of faith and religion; and close, long-lasting relationships between students and teachers.

It’s on this model that St. Maria Goretti Comprehensive High School operates, serving 400 students in the rural Northwestern Region of Cameroon––an area where a good education is anything but guaranteed.

The traditional Catholic focus on hard academics––maths, science, history, English, and French––are supplemented by religious education and a strong emphasis on doing good and helping others.

Locally developed professional programmes in business, information technology, and construction provide a pathway to specialised jobs for many graduates.

Operated solely by the Tertiary Sisters, the St. Maria Goretti enrolls both day students from the surrounding areas, and boarding students from throughout the region.

Almost all of St. Maria Goretti’s work is privately funded. More than 25 percent of students are on full scholarship, funded entirely by donors to the Tertiary Sisters.

If you are in a position to make a donation, we would be very grateful for your gift, and will put it to immediate good use.

At a glance

The spirit of Maria Hueber

Like at Catholic schools the world over, religious education plays the central role in St. Maria Gorretti’s curriculum. But here, the spirit of our founder, Maria Hueber, guides everything we do.

Hueber’s values––prayer, simplicity, hard work, love of nature––are passed on to students and are the keystone of our educational philosophy.

Students are encouraged to be a positive and empowering presence, whatever the situation.

And as Hueber did in her lifetime, we ensure that the underprivileged are given opportunities denied by others. More than a quarter of our students are on full scholarship, and nearly all come from humble backgrounds.

A labroratory for bright futures

It fills us with pride to witness students enroll barely as teenagers and graduate ready to succeed and give back to their communities.

Upon graduation, many students continue to study at university. Others start or go on to work at small businesses.

Thanks to our trade and professional programmes, others immediately enter professional fields. Many graduates find jobs in the fields of nursing, hotel management, accountancy, and teaching.

Still others pursue religious life as priests and sisters, some with the Tertiary Sisters.

Our students’ success is the fulfillment of our life mission––and is the fuel that drives us to bring Maria Huber’s vision to the next generation of students.
