Tertiary Sisters Open New Hospital in Soa, Cameroon to Expand Access to Care

by Sr. Marceline Yenmuleh

The Tertiary Sisters of St. Francis (TSSF) officially inaugurated the Franciscan Solidarity of Hearts Hospital in Soa, in Cameroon’s Centre Region, on 25 April 2026. The new facility expands the Congregation’s healthcare mission at a time of growing need.

The inauguration brought together Church leaders, government officials, traditional authorities, and members of the local community. The opening Mass was presided over by Archbishop Jean Mbarga of Yaoundé.

In his remarks, the Archbishop welcomed the initiative and acknowledged the Sisters’ longstanding commitment to healthcare. He noted the importance of accessible medical services that attend not only to physical needs but also to the dignity of the person.

TSSF Superior General Sr Theodosia Baki thanked the Provincial Leadership Team for bringing the project to completion, describing the hospital as part of the Congregation’s continuing commitment to care and service.

Provincial Superior Sr Olivia Waika explained that the decision to establish the hospital in Soa responds to concrete challenges faced by patients, particularly those requiring cardiac care. Many have been unable to travel to Kumbo for treatment due to the ongoing socio-political crisis in the North West Region of Cameroon. The new facility is intended to serve both local residents and patients from across Cameroon and neighbouring countries.

She also acknowledged the support of partners and collaborators and invited continued engagement to sustain the hospital’s work.

Following the liturgy, the facility and its staff were formally blessed. Local authorities, including the Mayor of Soa, expressed support for the project and welcomed the Sisters’ presence in the community.

The celebration brought participant from across the region and included music and traditional Njang dance, a highlight of the day’s festivities.

The Franciscan Solidarity of Hearts Hospital is part of the TSSF’s broader healthcare mission, which seeks to provide accessible and dignified care, particularly for those most in need.
